One of the most frequent questions I hear is “Is chiropractic safe for kids?” The answer may surprise you. Yes, the chiropractic adjustment is safe for people of all ages, including newborns. Let’s review the nervous system and how chiropractic helps it function. The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves in the body. The nervous system controls every organ, muscle, system, and function of the body. Spinal nerves exit the spinal cord through the vertebrae of the spine. Misalignment (also called subluxation) of the vertebrae can interfere with communication between the brain and the rest of the body. Chiropractic adjustments realign the spine so communication is restored. How do subluxations happen? Misalignment occurs with minor trauma, such as bumps, bruises, and falls. Repetitive motion, sports, even stress can cause misalignments. Lifting heavy objects, carrying heavy loads, and standing for long periods can cause the spinal vertebrae to move out of place. Sometimes, even quick, jerky movements can result in subluxation and pain. People all ages can experience subluxations in the spine. Infants and children can become misaligned from birth trauma, other minor or major traumas and developmental stress. In the first five years of life, the body produces more neural pathways than at any other time, and the first few years are critical to each child’s growth and development. Even if your child is in excellent health, minor traumas accumulate over time and can result in pain, discomfort and/or health issues in their teen and adult years. Chiropractic care has been shown to help with many childhood conditions. Parents and young patients report improvements in sleep, immune system function, ear infections, ADD/ADHD, colic, and digestive problems. Allergies, asthma, and seizure disorders have also been positively impacted by chiropractic care. If you have questions about chiropractic and how it can help you or your children, please feel free to call the office.
